Subject: R.A.M. Real Men Associated with Masons (Lecture given at the International Grand Conference) October Study Hall.
The Degree of Royal Arch Mason is founded upon the destruction of the first and the rebuilding of the Second Temple. The ceremonies of the degree have an interesting and graphic historical setting, and have a profound and reverential moral significance. The Royal Arch Degree is the completion of the Fellow craft degree, the unfolding of the second volume of history of that which was lost and how it was finally recovered. Without the Royal Arch Degree, the third degree is a song half sung, a story partly told or a promise left unfulfilled.
It has been said that “The Royal Arch stands as the rainbow of promise in the ritual; it stands as promise of the resurrection; of that which was lost and shall be recovered.” The Royal Arch accepted the rainbow, that God put in the Heavens as a covenant between God and man, that he would not destroy the world by water again-but by fire.
In the first degree of masonry, you learn to subdue your passions and improve yourself in masonry. This is followed by a question, “How will you improve yourself?” By conversing with well informed brothers who are glad to impart it, as you are to receive it. We need to be of good counsel, for the day will come when old men shall teach and young men shall work.
Royal Arch Masons hold firm to the belief in the complete Brotherhood of Man, the Fatherhood of God and the Immortality of the Soul with high regard. Therefore our members know as they travel around the world, he will be greeted with hospitality and friendship. The Royal Arch is the heart, root, backbone and marrow of Freemasonry.
Things eluded to throughout the teachings of the Royal Arch lead us to be real men of faith. God told Abraham to take Isaac upon Mt. Moriah and offer him as sacrifice; we are taught that 3x3 is emblematic of the trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. We are also taught there must be peace, love and unity. We know we serve a God of second chances as he allowed Zerubbabel to build a second temple, this time starting from within.
All men are created wise, and need to be swift to do good works for your community and family. We must be patient as the Ox to deal with the imperfections of others and ourselves, while continuing to have the strength of the Lion so that we can withstand the wilds of the evil until the day we raise the living Arch for the last time.
